Maine Heat Pump & Home Insulation: Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about heat pumps, insulation, air sealing, energy assessments, and Efficiency Maine rebates.

Getting Started
A home energy assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your home's energy performance. We walk through your home, look at your insulation, air sealing, heating system, and comfort issues, and identify exactly where you are losing energy. The result is a clear roadmap to the efficiency improvements that will have the greatest impact, with pricing and rebate amounts. It's the best way to make smart, cost-effective decisions about energy upgrades. And it's completely free. Read our complete guide to home energy audits in Maine.
Yes, it's genuinely free with no strings attached. We don't charge for the assessment, and we don't pressure you to buy anything afterward. Our philosophy is that an informed homeowner makes a better customer. If our recommendations make sense for your situation, great. If not, we hope you'll keep us in mind for the future.
About an hour. We walk through your entire home, look at your insulation, heating system, and comfort issues, and answer your questions. No equipment, no disruption. We ask that you or another adult be home.
We primarily serve Greater Portland and surrounding communities, including Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Cumberland, Westbrook, Gorham, Standish, Windham, Raymond, Gray, New Gloucester, Brunswick, Freeport, Pownal, Durham, Topsham, and Harpswell.
Heat Pumps
Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps like Mitsubishi's Hyper Heat series operate efficiently down to -13°F. Maine winters are well within their operating range. We've installed hundreds of systems across Greater Portland and our customers consistently report that their heat pumps perform reliably even during the coldest stretches of winter.
Mitsubishi's Diamond Contractor designation is their highest tier. It requires rigorous training, ongoing certification, and a track record of quality installations. As a Diamond Contractor, we can offer an extended 12-year parts warranty, compared to the standard 5-year warranty with other installers. This is a significant long-term value difference.
In most cases, yes. A well-insulated home requires a smaller (less expensive) heat pump system and will see much better energy savings. Our free assessment evaluates both your insulation and heating needs together, so we can recommend the right sequence of improvements for your budget and timeline.
Costs vary based on the number of zones, the specific equipment, and your home's configuration. A single-zone system typically ranges from $4,000–$7,000 before rebates. A multi-zone system for a whole home might range from $12,000–$25,000 before rebates. After Efficiency Maine rebates (up to $9,000), the net cost is often significantly lower. Insulation & Air Sealing
Insulation slows the transfer of heat through walls, ceilings, and floors. Air sealing stops the movement of air through gaps and cracks. Both are essential. Insulation without air sealing is like wearing a sweater with holes in it. We always perform air sealing before insulation for maximum performance.
We use a technique called dense-pack insulation. Small holes (about 2") are drilled into the wall cavity, either from the inside or outside, and insulation is blown in under pressure to fill the entire cavity. The holes are then patched and finished. It's minimally disruptive and highly effective.
Attic insulation typically takes 1 day. Whole-home projects including walls and basement may take 2–3 days. We'll give you a specific timeline when we provide your quote.
