About This Data

Fuel prices come from the Maine Governor's Energy Office weekly survey of fuel dealers across the state. We use prices for the Southeast / Greater Portland region.

The calculator adjusts efficiency based on your system type and age. For example, an ancient oil boiler runs at roughly 70% AFUE, while a newer one might hit 87%. Upgrade options use manufacturer-rated efficiencies: ductless heat pumps at COP 2.7, ducted at COP 2.3, and condensing boilers at 95% AFUE.

These represent typical installed performance, not lab ratings. Your actual efficiency depends on equipment condition and sizing.

What This Tool Doesn't Show

  • Exact equipment cost. Installation costs vary by home. The insulation and rebate sections in Part 2 give rough estimates, but a free energy assessment gives you exact numbers.
  • Your specific insulation levels. Part 2 estimates savings from insulation upgrades assuming minimal existing insulation. Your actual savings depend on current conditions.
  • Maintenance costs. Oil and propane systems require annual servicing. Heat pumps need filter cleaning and periodic professional maintenance.
  • The value of cooling. Heat pumps provide air conditioning. If you currently run window AC units, that cost isn't captured here.
