Signs Your Boiler or Furnace Needs Replacing

If any of these sound familiar, a free assessment will tell you exactly where you stand.

Your system is 15+ years old

Older cast-iron boilers and furnaces run at 60-80% efficiency. A new condensing unit captures heat that your old system sends up the chimney.

Fuel bills keep climbing

Efficiency degrades over time. If your fuel costs are rising faster than fuel prices, your system is losing efficiency and working harder than it should.

Frequent repairs or breakdowns

If you are spending more on repairs each year, the cost of a new high-efficiency system often pays for itself through lower fuel bills and zero repair costs.

Uneven heat throughout the house

Cold spots, rooms that never warm up, or radiators that take forever to heat are signs your system cannot keep up with your home's heating needs.

High-Efficiency Heating FAQs

A condensing boiler or furnace captures heat from exhaust gases that a conventional unit sends up the chimney. This extra heat recovery is what pushes efficiency from the 80% range to 95%+, meaning you burn significantly less fuel for the same amount of heat.
If your home has a natural gas connection, it is typically the most cost-effective fuel. If natural gas is not available in your area, propane is an excellent alternative. Many of the same high-efficiency boiler and furnace models run on either fuel. We will assess which makes the most sense for your situation during your free assessment.
Yes. A new high-efficiency boiler connects to your existing hydronic distribution, whether that is cast-iron radiators, baseboard, or radiant floor heating. In many cases, the new boiler is a direct swap with no changes needed to your existing piping or distribution system.
Heat pumps are the most efficient heating option and qualify for significant rebates. But if your home already has a hydronic distribution system you love (radiators, radiant floors), a high-efficiency boiler upgrade can deliver major fuel savings while keeping the heat delivery you are used to. Many homeowners combine both: a heat pump for primary heating and cooling with a boiler for supplemental hydronic heat.
Financing is available through Efficiency Maine Green Bank and NEIF EnergyPlus loan programs. We will help you understand your options and find the best financing fit during your free assessment. Visit our rebates and financing page for details.
