0% Heat Pump Financing in Maine: Efficiency Maine Loans & Rebates

Maine homeowners installing a cold-climate heat pump can pair Efficiency Maine's low and no-interest loan programs with income-dependent rebates. A 1-year bridge loan is available at 0% APR, and rebates can reach $9,500 per home before financing is even needed. As a registered Efficiency Maine vendor, we apply your rebate directly to the invoice and help you line up financing for what is left.

How Heat Pump Financing Works in Maine

A heat pump installation in Maine is typically paid for in three layers: the Efficiency Maine rebate (deducted from your invoice upfront), a state-backed or private loan for the remaining balance, and, for some homeowners, out-of-pocket payment for the rest. You do not have to qualify for a loan to get a rebate, and you do not have to use financing at all if you would rather pay cash. Financing exists to cover the gap after rebates, not to replace them.

Two loan programs cover most Maine heat pump projects: Efficiency Maine's Green Bank, which is purpose-built for energy upgrades and offers the lowest rates, and NEIF Energy Plus, a private program with a higher loan ceiling and no income requirements. Both are unsecured, meaning neither places a lien on your home.

Efficiency Maine Green Bank: 0% Heat Pump Financing

The Green Bank Bridge Loan is the 0% APR option most homeowners are searching for. It finances your eligible project costs after anticipated rebates are subtracted, over a 1-year term, subject to approval.

The 0% Bridge Loan carries a $500 origination fee and a 1-year term. It covers your eligible project costs after your anticipated Efficiency Maine rebate is subtracted, not the rebate itself, and is subject to approval. Because of the short term, it works best for homeowners who can repay within a year. Homeowners financing the balance over several years typically use the 5-year or 10-year Standard option instead, or the Income-Based option if they qualify.

Green Bank loans max out at $25,000 and are unsecured, so there is no lien placed on your home. They cover qualifying energy efficiency upgrades, including heat pumps, but are not available for high-efficiency boiler or furnace installations.

NEIF Energy Plus: Higher Loan Amounts

NEIF Energy Plus is a private, unsecured loan program with no income requirement and a higher ceiling than the Green Bank. Rate and maximum loan amount are tiered by credit score. It works well for larger whole-home projects or homeowners combining a heat pump with other improvements in one loan.

Credit ScoreAPRMax Loan AmountMax Term
700+8.99%$50,00012 years (loans of $10,000+)

NEIF rates and terms as of August 2025 (NEIF EnergyPlus Overview). NEIF has not published a newer version as of this September 2026 check; confirm current rates before applying.

As a published example at the 8.99% rate (as of August 2025): a $15,000 loan runs about $311/month over 5 years or $190/month over 10 years. A $100 flat funding fee applies per loan. Loans can be prepaid at any time with no penalty, and there is no lien on your home. NEIF covers energy and non-energy home improvements together, as long as the energy portion is at least half the project. Credit pre-screening gives an instant decision; final approval depends on the full application.

For larger projects, homeowners often combine the Green Bank (up to $25,000, better rates) with NEIF for the amount above that.

What Efficiency Maine Rebates Cover Before You Finance

Before financing enters the picture, most homeowners reduce the project cost with a Maine heat pump rebate from Efficiency Maine. Rebates are income-dependent and applied per outdoor unit.

Household IncomePer Outdoor UnitMax (3 units)
Low Income$3,000$9,000
Moderate Income$2,000$6,000
Any Income$1,000$3,000
$500 Limited-Time Bonus: Whole-home Efficiency Maine heat pump upgrades completed and claimed March 1 through December 31, 2026 receive an additional $500 per housing unit, on top of the per-unit amounts above.

A rebate is not the same as financing. It is deducted directly from your invoice before you ever pay, since we are a registered Efficiency Maine vendor. Financing only covers what is left after the rebate. For most homeowners, that means the loan amount is smaller than the total project cost, not the full price of the equipment.

Rebate amounts are maximums, not guarantees, and depend on your household income tier and the number of outdoor units installed. See the full breakdown of income tiers, combined rebate math, and stacking with insulation rebates on our Efficiency Maine rebates page.

Heat Pump Financing FAQs

Yes, in a specific form. Efficiency Maine's Green Bank offers a 1-year Bridge Loan at 0% APR, with a $500 origination fee (per efficiencymaine.com, checked September 2026). It is meant as a short-term bridge rather than a multi-year interest-free loan. For longer terms, Green Bank's Standard and Income-Based options carry rates between 5.99% and 7.99% APR.
Efficiency Maine heat pump rebates run $1,000 to $3,000 per outdoor unit depending on household income, up to $9,000 for a low-income household installing three units. A $500 whole-home bonus is available through December 31, 2026. Rebates are income-dependent and are not guaranteed amounts. See the full breakdown on our Efficiency Maine rebates page.
Both programs run a credit check. Efficiency Maine publishes a minimum average FICO score of 620 for its Standard Green Bank loans and 580 for the Income-Based option (per efficiencymaine.com, checked September 2026). NEIF Energy Plus does not publish a single minimum, but its rate and maximum loan amount are tiered by credit score, as of an August 2025 NEIF document: 8.99% APR up to $50,000 at 700+, and 14.99% APR at $35,000 (680-699) or $25,000 (640-679). We can point you to both applications during your free assessment, but approval is decided by the lender, not by Horizon Homes.
Yes, and most homeowners do. The rebate is deducted from your invoice first, then financing covers what is left. Financing is not a substitute for the rebate, it covers the balance after the rebate is applied.
Green Bank is state-backed, purpose-built for energy upgrades, and offers the lowest rates, including the 0% Bridge Loan, but caps out at $25,000 (per efficiencymaine.com, checked September 2026). NEIF Energy Plus is a private program with no income requirement, loans up to $50,000 for borrowers with a 700+ credit score (less for lower credit tiers, per an August 2025 NEIF document), and covers non-energy improvements alongside the heat pump. Larger projects often combine both.
No. Both Efficiency Maine Green Bank and NEIF Energy Plus are unsecured loan programs. Neither places a lien on your home.
